February 25 (Renewables Now) – Spain will aim at 120 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, primarily wind and solar, the country's national integrated energy and climate plan (NECP 2021-2030) shows. On Friday, the Spanish government approved the plan proposing that renewables make up 42% of the final energy consumption in 2030.
In addition, the new strategy includes a goal of 12 GW of electrolyzer capacity to produce green hydrogen. The final consumption target for renewable energy increases to 48%, with 81% of electricity generation, while the energy efficiency target rises to 43%. APPA Renovables celebrated the new targets with a measure of caution.
In the past 12 months, the country has launched and awarded several auctions for energy storage, including its first tender for energy storage to be co-located with renewable power. Through the Institution for the Diversification and Energy Savings (IDAE), the tender awarded 880MW/1,809MWh of energy storage in November 2023.
